Using an iPad: Educational Links. Hi there, i have a dongle to authorize the use of these apps, but i dont havqe the installer disks.

I believe they came on 3.5' 1.44MB floppy disks only! Which is why i cant find them anywhere. Is there any computer literate person out there that has these installers? And could copy the files or use WinImage to create a disk image of the disks? Im talking about the windows versions of logic 2.0 + logic 2.5 - these are the only versions of logic that will run on windows 3.x (early 90s windows!

As reported by our resident eagle-eyed scout oink yesterday, Dorling Kindersley (DK) has just released 'The Hit Kit' which comprises a new flavour of the much praised Logic sequencer: Logic Hit Kit. It will be out in the US on Nov 17 but is already available in the UK. please check details here: http://dk.com/hitkit
Anyway it is based on Logic 6.1 and is similar in scope to Logic Fun for OS9 with some major additions (sorry to spoil the suspense this abruptly):
Mac OS X compatible
Emagic Polyphonic synth included
Special edition of Emagic Sample Player included
I will try to cover all aspects for those unfamiliar with Logic but I must admit I am likely to concentrate on what's been left out from the next step up Logic Audio and what makes it so much appealing compared to Logic Fun. If you have any extra feature you are wondering about I suggest you check out the manual which is available online or just ask me and I'll try my best to find out.
Anyway for those of you too lazy to follow the link let's start with the system requirements and core features:
Mac OS 10.2 or higher, G3
Mac OS 9.2 or higher, G3
Win 98se/Me/2000/XP, P300MHz
128 Mb Ram
dedicated audio hardware, midi interface and separate HD recommended
Features:
8 audio tracks
8 software instruments
16 midi tracks (16 channels)
2 sends (no inserts)
2 busses with fixed Averb/Chorus
2 band EQ
stereo input/output
GM/GS/XG support
Quicktime/AV support
Score editor
Event editor
Matrix editor
Sample editor
ES P polysynth
EXSP1 sample player
It will come to no surprise to people familiar with Logic Fun but these limitations are retained and possibly a shop stopper:
only 1 document open at any time
almost no local functions
no autodrop
no external fx or vsti
no autoload song let alone environment
no freeze
no mp3 suppport
in addition the following are an annoyance:
signature change supported but needs importing from a midi file. At least I have found no way to program them in a new document.
sample editor includes minimal set of functions: regions, normalise, silence, trim, zero crossing.
quantizing of midi in matrix is unavailable but I have the feeling that the score editor permits a minimum of time manipulations (untried).
Anyway, there are a few features above Logic Fun which makes this a very good value and usable sequencer IMO:
offline bounce (could do without but nice)
24 bits (mandatory these days)
ES P included with all presets (see below)
EXSP1, a new basic sampler (the shocking news)
2 last two of course deserves a bit more attention:Mac
as far as I can tell the ES P is not a cut down version and includes all parameters and filters included in the other flavours of Logic. My only concern is that the presets are slightly smaller in size (kb) so there could be some finer adjustment missing although the interface looks exactly the same. Anyway the ES P has 8 voices and is as the name implies polyphonic.
But for me the real jewel of Logic Hit Kit is the included sample player which apparently both reads samples from RAM and HD depending on sample size, is 16 voice polyphonic and compatible with EXS24 and Soundfont2 formats. According to the manual it is supposed to come with samples but they didn't install and judging by the size of the partition on the CD I'm inclined to think it's a misrint (the 2nd CD includes samples in AIFF but no instruments as such).
Anyway as you would expect there is a limited amount of of controls over the samples but it's still a bargain for the price. Check out this screenshot for more details:
(GUI on left, controls on the right)
I'm sure a few of you will just raise an eyebrow and say: I already got Logic so what's in it for me. well read on..
If like me you have been on the road or sitting at work waiting for the next job to come and wished you had taken your Logic dongle with you you will rejoyce at the thought that you can now have a sequencer around compatible with Logic's songs format to start afresh on new songs.
Let me explain.. got an idea? just fire up Logic Hit Kit and use the sampler in conjuction with the EXS24 GM kit (or any other, the free ns_kit for example) to lay down a basic drum track. Want a quick versatile synth to write that unforgettable melody (which believe me you will have forgotten by the time you get home!). well you can, all for $30 and ready to open back in Audio/Gold/Platinum. Convinced? well you should ;-)[/u]
