A quick update: I ended up buying a stationary PC with 2 Titan XPs. These 2 GPUs were over 50% of the total cost of the computer so I would not save that much money if I hooked them up as external mac GPUs, but the performance would be severely affected. I am very happy with the setup, easy to use over ssh. If you are buying Titan XPs then I recommend to go for the PC.
